Position Opening:

Manager, Education and Community Engagement

The Manager of Education and Community Engagement (MECE)is a dynamic, enthusiastic, practitioner who

appreciates the profound significance and legacies of the region’s African American history, heritage, and

culture. This passionate self-starter develops creative and unique visitor experiences that are consistent with the

mission of the Griot to “create a community of life-long learners who explore, discover, experience and embrace

the region’s rich Black heritage.”

The MECE reports directly to the Executive Director, CEO and oversees and coordinates the activities of the

Community Engagement Fellow and the Visitors’ Experience Coordinator. The MECE will work closely with the

Collections Manager/Archivist to ensure optimal delivery of interpretative, educational and community programs

that appeal to a broad based, diverse audience while highlighting the profound cultural heritage of the African

American community. Emphasis will be given to programs that attract youth.

Routine responsibilities include, but are not limited to, recruiting volunteers, developing nurturing collaborative

partnerships; designing and hosting community events and programs; attending community events; researching

grants and other funding resources to support community education programs; providing input relative to core

interpretative and touring exhibits; attending staff and board meetings; preparing and submitting oral and written

reports; creating and administering program evaluations, and other related activities.

Qualifications:

 Bachelor's degree in a field of study conducive to performance of the responsibilities: African American

history, American studies, public history, museum studies, cultural preservation, or related fields.

 Minimum of three years administrative/project management experience, preferably in a community-

facing cultural, educational, or nonprofit environment

Skills:

 Passionate commitment to research and share the African American legacy

 Strong written and oral communication skills

 Ability to work independently and as a team member to accomplish organizational goals

 Excellent time management and other administrative skills required to meet deadlines

 Proficient with Microsoft Suites. Familiar with Adobe Pro, Squarespace, graphic design, social media,

and on-line tools

 Exceptional quick thinker able to work in a face-paced, rapidly changing environment with diverse

people and limited resources

 Available to meet a schedule that includes evenings and weekends, as required.

 Able to stand long periods and lift up to 30 pounds
