This initiative is part of a multi-faceted, long-term vision that builds upon previously initiated and ongoing internal capacity-building activities. Its primary goals include three scopes of work: community engagement, Team Griot, and facility planning.
Among the most significant challenges to confront was The Griot’s inadequate staffing. RAC awarded us a special opportunity grant that enabled us to retain our part-time Manager of Community Engagement, Gail Delaney, and to create and fill a new position of Museum Assistant, ably held by Ian Darnell. Both positions were funded by RAC through 2018. An unexpected, one-time financial contribution, from a private estate in 2018 ensured their tenure for a third year.
The composition of Team Griot was expanded to include Joan Briccetti, Roseann Weiss, Ann Haubrich, Austin Skinner, Marilyn Webster-Brown, Leon Sharp, Andrea Purnell, Felicia Shaw, and Lois Conley. Each member serves voluntarily and brings unique professional expertise in non-profit arts and humanities management. Team Griot continues its mission of assisting The Griot with envisioning the future, conducting an organizational self-assessment, and working toward development of a three-year strategic plan that will include a capital campaign, the proceeds of which will help ensure the museum’s long-term institutional stability. During 2019, Team Griot will engage in regular planning meetings, focus groups, funding research, and related capacity-building activities and strategies.
